This course will introduce students to the study of kinesiology as it pertains to dance practice. The muscular and skeletal systems will be examined with a specific focus on scientific movement analysis and efficient function for the dancer. Students will learn how to observe and analyze movements common to the classical ballet and modern dance vocabularies, and how to identify muscle imbalances for corrective purposes. Current theories about body alignment and movement re-patterning will be explored, with a focus on optimal execution of dance technique. Specific applications of the material to practice in dance technique classes will be examined.
