This course will look at the existing research in performance psychology. We will examine general performance psychology research as well as dance specific studies. We will go through some of the research conducted by the Centre for Advanced Training (CAT) in the UK on dancers and combine their findings with general research on performance psychology in physical activity. Theories such as the Self-Determination Theory and Self-Concordance model will be explored and related to the concepts of effort and deliberate practice. We will also provide practical advice for teachers and goal setting activities for the implementation of the class material in the studio.
