The Importance of Rest in Dance

The Importance of Rest in Dance

At this time of rest and reflection I wanted to write a little note about the importance taking it easy for dancers. While most of us tend to love what we do, we are often perfectionist and workaholic about our passion. These tendencies drive many to overwork and fatigue their bodies to the point where injuries are common. Research has shown that rest and well being are necessary for dancers to maintain a healthy career. In my own research I suggested periodization strategies to pace the dancers work and rest periods. This strategy, which uses varied workloads in terms of volume and intensity combined with a yearly plan of training that includes preparation, performance, and rest periods is used by Olympians to continue improving their performing capacity throughout the year. I wish you a restful holiday season! Take time to plan and recuperate!
