This course will explore several anthropological approaches to the study of dance and performance in different cultures. We will look at examples of dances in various geo-political locations around the world and unpack the meaning, structure, and function of each form for its practitioners and audiences. We will also examine the methods of anthropological research and try out different tools of ethnographic fieldwork including participant observation, note taking, and video recording.
